Salve Regina Commencement 2014 and the Ivy Lodge

Ivy’s Ties to Salve Regina: Wakehurst Manor

Wakehurst Mansion Newport

Just a few steps away from the Ivy Lodge on 12 Clay Street, you will find your way on to the sprawling land owned by our neighbor  Salve Regina University. Whether you are walking down Cliff Walk on your way to the Breakers, or exploring the residential neighborhood that surrounds us, it is impossible not to run into one of Salve’s historic buildings. The Ivy Lodge Bed and Breakfast is well known to our guests for its location in the scenic historic district. It is not uncommon that our property, along with those of our neighbors, be tied to the prestigious families from the Gilded age.

General Van AlenThe Ivy Lodge’s ties to Salve Regina began with a tragic event. In the fall of 1881, General James Henry Van Alen resided on the spacious plot of land that is now home to the Ivy Lodge on12 Clay Street. His son’s wife, Emily Astor Van Alen, had just passed away during childbirth, leaving son, James J. Van Alen, in deep mourning. In hopes of helping his son, General Van Alen bought another piece of land just down the street from his and told his son that he could build whatever type of home he wished. James J. then began construction on the remarkable residence known as Wakehurst.  Today, Wakehurst is home to Salve Regina’s library where students can be seen coming in and out of the stunning landmark embarking on an array of studies.

The Ivy Lodge would like to congratulate those students graduating this Sunday and wish them well as they make their way into the world.

The More Things Change the More they Stay the Same

Ivy Lodge Bed and Breakfast

The more things change the more they stay the same.

We are pleased to welcome Don and Jacqui Jursek to take over as owners of the Ivy Lodge.  After 15 years of offering the finest accommodations to guests of Newport it was essential that we pass the torch to someone who would commit to our already well established reputation for our customers from past and present.  The Ivy will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we do wish the Jurseks the best of luck in the coming seasons”.

Darlene and Daryl McKenzie

Introducing Don and Jacqui Jursek, new proprietors of the Ivy Lodge

Throughout life’s journey, we may veer off in many different directions on the compass of our lives, never realizing that all points of light are leading to one place, and possibly one’s “soul” purpose. Don and Jacqui have many points during their passage that led them to consider owning the Lodge...

Back in the day, Don had extensive training in culinary arts when he was Chef at Ken's Steakhouse Cafe V. With a degree in business and finance, he changed careers to banking. Most recently, he retired from 25 years at Brown Brothers Harriman, the oldest and largest partnership bank in America, where he was Senior Vice President and Division Executive. His dream was always to own his own restaurant.

During the past 25 years, Jacqui has had many passions, first being a mother of two wonderful sons. She is skilled as an interior architect and space planner and had her own business in redesign for residential and business space. For many years, she worked at one of New England’s largest garden centers learning, studying and selling plants, trees and shrubs. For the past ten years she also studied culinary arts where she was a personal cook catering to large groups for lunches and dinners. In addition, to get her feet wet in the inn business, Jacqui was a night’s innkeeper in Massachusetts. Her dream was to own her own inn.

From journey's beginning to end, and somewhere in the middle, all points lead home. For us, we are two people who have design, business and financial skills, we are both trained in cooking, and we were both ready at the same time to take a leap of faith toward a different life. Our compass has led us here--to the IVY LODGE. We are committed to nurturing people’s vacation experience by preserving the beauty of the surroundings, the food, and mostly the love of hospitality. Please join us as we begin a new chapter...and that of the Ivy Lodge.”

Best wishes,

Don and Jacqui Jursek- new owners of the Ivy Lodge

Irish Heritage Month Newport RI

Parade Route

When admiring the historic buildings of Newport you may stop and wonder who built some of this beautiful architecture and parks we see today?  You would be surprised to hear that a lot of the early production in Newport was engineered by Irish immigrants long before Newport’s infamous “blue bloods” transformed the city into their lavish summertime resorts.  During the Gilded Age, Irish immigrants arrived to our quaint Island of Aquidneck to work the coal mines in the nearby town of Portsmouth and more specifically, the Emerald Isle immigrants began to settle in what is now known as the Fifth Ward.
