Newport Irish Heritage Month

Celebrate all that is Irish during this exciting month-long event featuring Celtic storytelling, Irish step-dancing, interesting lectures, afternoon teas, an Irish coffee contest, Jameson Irish Whiskey tastings and a festive St. Patrick's Day parade on March 14.

The kickoff event is the annual Kinsale, Ireland, Festival of Fine Food, held March 6 through 9. Kinsale is known as the gourmet capital of Ireland. It's also Newport's sister city and, since 2000, chefs from Kinsale and Newport have participated in a culinary exchange, opening up the kitchens of select restaurants to one another and letting lucky diners taste the results. After the Irish chefs come to Newport to cook up dishes such as poached darne of sea-fresh brill, American chefs will head to the Emerald Isle to make New England clam chowder.

The 53rd Annual Newport, Rhode Island Saint Patrick's Day Parade will be held, rain, snow, or shine, on Saturday, March 14th 2009.  It will begin promptly at 11:00am from Newport City Hall and will proceed to Carroll Avenue at Saint Augustin's Church in the heart of the Fifth Ward.  The parade this year is estimated to last 2 hours and will include 10 Pipe Bands, 12 Marching Bands, 4 Fife & Drum Corps, 3 Clown Units, 7 reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations including police and fire units, social/fraternal organizations, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Schools, and non-profits.

Irish Heritage Month Newport has a number of Irish ties, including sister city Kinsale, Ireland. The Kinsale Festival of Fine Food features local and visiting Kinsale chefs at particiapting restaurants.

Sister cities, is a concept whereby towns or cities in geographically and politically distinct areas are paired, with the goal of fostering human contact and cultural links between their inhabitants. In the European Union, such pairs of towns are known as friendship towns, partner towns or twin towns.

Newport is a city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island about 30 miles (48 km) south of Providence. Known as a New England summer resort and for the famous Newport Mansions, it is the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport which houses the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center. The city is the seat of Newport County. Newport was known for being one of the "Summer White Houses" during the administrations of Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. The population was 26,475 at the 2000 census.

Kinsale is a town in County Cork, Ireland. Located some 25 km south of Cork City on the coast near the Old Head of Kinsale, it sits at the mouth of the River Bandon and has a population of 2,257 which increases substantially during the summer months when the tourist season is at its peak and when the boating fraternity arrive in large numbers. The April 2006 census recorded that British nationals made up 9% of the town's population.[1]

Like Newport,Kinsale is a popular holiday resort only catering to Irish and foreign tourists which is known for its many gourmet restaurants and leisure activities - including yachting, sea angling, and golf. The town also has several art galleries and a noted school of English. The town is compact with a quaint air of antiquity in the narrow intersecting streets. There is a large yachting marina close to the town centre which attracts sailing enthusiasts. A number of hotels cater for the tourists, namely, the Blue Haven, The White Lady, The Trident and Actons on the Harbour's edge. The Carlton, overlooking [Oysterhaven|Oysterhaven Bay]], 3 km from town, is the newest addition to the hospitality sector. The town is noted for its eating establishments, and holds a "Gourmet Festival" annually. The celebrity chef Keith Floyd was previously a resident of Kinsale.[2]
