Celebrating the Season

Posted by Lisa Conners

Whatever holidays you choose to celebrate this time of year Newport has a special event for you.  The sparkling clear lights are up, the decorated boats have paraded around the harbor, gilded age mansions are bursting with their elegant attire and special events (www.newportmansions.org).  The Newport community has organized a Calendar of Events for the entire month of December that is known as Christmas in Newport (www.christmasinnewport.org).  The official opening ceremonies include a tree lighting, an artillery cannon salute, proclamations, a colonial Open House and live entertainment (Thursday December 1, Washington Square).

Christmas in Newport features holiday events every single day!  Many historic buildings are open for special holiday visits and historic tours.  There are holiday teas, Santa’s Workshop and a GIANT Gingerbread Lighthouse at the Visitors Center.  The Doorway Decoration Contest is a much anticipated competition that produces spectacular results.  Annual holiday concerts and performances, in various, beautiful settings are more popular every year.

Newport is a genuine holiday shopping destination with almost two dozen arts and crafts fairs, and wreath and tree sales.  This year many local merchants will participate in two weekends of a  “Newport Holiday Stroll”  ( Dec.3 & 4, 10 & 11) featuring free parking and gift wrapping, coordinated hours, special discounts and lots more reasons to shop Newport.   As always, an Ivy Lodge gift certificate www.ivylodge.com  is the perfect holiday gift.
