How do you prefer your chowder? Creamy white or clear and briny or with a tangy tomato base? New England or Manhattan? With fish or with clams? With so many choices when it comes to Chowder, how can you choose just one?
On June 7th, the best of the best chowder cooks will compete in the 2014 Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook Off in Newport, RI, where you can chow down on some of the best “Chow-dah” in town. The Great Chowder Cook Off hosted at the Harborfront Yachting Center has been featured on the Food Network and the Travel Channel, and is widely known for obtaining the longest running chowder championships, drawing in competitors and foodies from all over the country. Attendees will have their picks of endless varieties of chowder, from traditional New England to exotic concoctions made by dozens of restaurants participating in this year's event. The competition will be divided up between three categories: Clam, Seafood, and Creative. The grand prize for winning cooks is always an overflowing award...and more importantly the champions have bragging rights for the rest of the year. There will also be fun games, live music, and activities for all ages to enjoy. Book a weekend stay with us at the Ivy Lodge...just a short walk away form this year's Chowder Cookoff event!
What else could go better with your chowder? Why not try some great local oysters as well--served on the half shell, fried or broiled. The Newport Oyster Festival will also be held on June 7th along side the chowder fest. The best of local shellfish and seafood are presented farmers’ market style thanks to the Matunuck Oyster Farm... paired with beer, spirits and live music. The festival continues into the evening making it a great after-party following the Chowder Awards Ceremony and a popular area to explore during the event. Entry is free with your Chowder ticket! To attend the Newport Oyster Festival only (without a Chowder Cook-Off ticket), tickets are only $3 in advance or $5 day-of admission.
Some highlights of this include:
Seven full hours of delicious beer & spirits paired with Matunuck Oyster Farm oysters! Event time is 12pm-7pm.
Raw Bar (Oysters, Clams and Shrimp Cocktail), Lobster Rolls, and Fried Oysters, Clams & Scallops,
