Food Festivals Kick-Off with Oysters on the Wharf!

Posted by Bliss Clemmer and Lisa Conners

Oyster Festival: Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at Bowen's Wharf

oysters-1.jpg

You know about Newport ‘s many festivals such as the Classical, Folk and Jazz music festivals.  Another reason to visit are the Food festivals!  Kicking off this season is The First Annual Bowen’s Wharf Newport Oyster Festival on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22.

Bowen’s Wharf has long supported and promoted local, RI maritime businesses. The aim of the new event is “to raise awareness of the Oyster Aquaculture industry in RI and the people involved in it” (whatsupnewport.com).  Folks will have the opportunity to meet individual oyster growers and learn more about this increasing segment of the economy.  Oyster Aquaculture is joining other fishermen, shell-fishermen, and lobstermen as an expanding contributor.

All varieties of delicious oysters (and there are many!) that come from RI waters will be featured.  It is a family friendly event with a shucking contest, live music and of course, plenty of food and drink from several  outstanding local restaurants.  It all happens on the historic Bowen’s Wharf waterfront, rain or shine.  Check Ivy Lodge availability and plan a visit. Food lovers are already booking for the next great food event, The Great Chowder Cookoff on June 18.  That will be followed by the Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival on September 23, 24,25 and the Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival, October 15 and 16.

Newport is full of terrific restaurants that will provide an unforgettable dining experience any time of the year.  Ivy Lodge is the perfect place to stay while you enjoy exploring  all of the gastronomic delights that The City by the Sea has to offer.

Newport Music Festival 2016

Posted by Lisa Conners

The music festivals of July in Newport are legendary.  In 2016, they run from July 8 to the very last day of the month .  For lovers of classical music the Newport Music Festival  (July 8-24, www.newportmusic.org) is the highlight.  Originally launched in 1953, the Festival has presented more than 2,000 concerts in the Newport Mansions and other stunning venues in the community. Audiences come to see and hear classical chamber music performed in grand salons that much of it was written for.  This summer a series of 10 concerts will feature the music of the great Russian master, Rachmaninoff.

Over the years more than 1,000 artists have performed; many have debuted there.  This year will be a first performance for many more. This 48thanniversary has a dramatic debut like no other.  The Boganyi Grand Piano will premiere on July  9 at The Breakers.  This “Wonder Piano” is the creation of Hungarian pianist Gergely Boganyi.  After more than 10 years of “research, design and development” this pioneering innovation has arrived in America.  Made from composite material with a cast iron frame its technology provides music described as “very clear…schockingly”. It is visually striking. Boganyi_Piano.jpg

Thirteen different locations will host 60 concerts.  Many are held in various Newport Mansions lending their Gilded Age splendor to the atmosphere.  Morning concerts are at 11:00a.m.; afternoon concerts usually at 4:00p.m.;  evening concerts vary some a beginning at 8:00 or 9:00p.m.  Beautiful music will happen all around Ivy Lodge which is walking distance from most of the venues and special events.

July’s schedule is packed:  Independence Day and Fireworks;  Newport Music Festival;  International Tennis Hall of Fame Championships;  Black Ships Festival;  Newport Folk Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Bridgefest.

Interested in sporting events?   The International Polo Series begins in June and runs until September;Polo.jpg

June 5 is the Newport 10 Miler road race and June 17 sees the start of the Newport to Bermuda Race.  For a full week in July top tennis players compete and are honored at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.  August has the Save the Bay Swim, and September the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Race.  October has the Newport Marathon and Half Marathon.

And this is only a partial list of the reasons to come to Newport. Don’t wait until the last minute to find accommodations.

Newport's St. Patrick's Day Parade-2016

Posted by Lisa Conners

It’s almost March, the month that brings spring.  For Newport, 2016 is the 39th year of the designation of March as  Newport Irish Heritage Month.  It is a reflection of the pride taken in the contributions of Irish immigrants in Newport from colonial times through the present.  The Museum of Newport Irish History Interpretive Center on lower Thames Street is well worth a visit.  It presents key aspects of life in the local Irish community throughout the history of Newport. (newportirishhistory.org) Fort_Adams-1.jpg

The evidence of the contributions and accomplishments of the Irish community is everywhere.  Irish immigrants built Fort Adams.  The Fort, an enormous coastal fortification, is now a state park.  It is “…a massive work with structural walls of local shale and Maine granite” (fortadams.org).  Forty Steps on Cliff Walk (only a few blocks from Ivy Lodge) is recognized as a gathering spot for Irish Newport residents in the 19th and early 20th centuries.  At Forty steps  with a program of traditional music, dance and celebrating,  the community marks  the beginning of Newport Irish Heritage Month ( Feb. 28, 2016).

The largest event honoring  Newport Irish Heritage is of course the St. Patrick’s Day Parade!  2016 is the 60th Annual Parade that is always held on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day (Saturday, March 12).  The 2 hour parade begins at Newport City Hall on Broadway and finishes at Carroll Avenue, by St. Augustin’s Church in the heart of the traditional, local Irish neighborhood. download.jpg

Happy crowds line the parade route to see local, regional and state organizations marching with pipe bands, fife and drum corps, marching bands, police and fire personnel, many social and athletic groups, Clowns and more (everyone is Irish for the Parade!).  Post- parade the celebrating and honoring of the Irish continues in many locations throughout the city.  Most establishments serve Corned Beef and Cabbage in some form along with much music and dance.

Ivy lodge is a 10 minute walk to the parade route. Free parking is always available!  The Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a unique experience, a great way to see the city

NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND DAFFODIL DAYS 2016

Posted by Lisa Conners

It’s already time to begin making plans for a Spring visit to Newport .   Why not come for the Third Annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival  this year happening  April 16 through April 24?  In 2006 Newport launched their “daffy “project of planting one million daffodil bulbs throughout the city.  It celebrates “renewal, beauty and live-ability in every neighborhood”.  Over the last 9 years 384,000 bulbs have been planted.  In order to achieve the one million blooms on private as well as publicproperties a Fall free bulb distribution happens.  This year 106,000 bulbs were distributed (daffodillion.com)!

All this means that 494,000daffodil bulbs are hibernating.  The project is now approaching “half-a-dillion”!!  The flowers wave from neighborhood yards and gardens, from sweeping public spaces and from businesses and window boxes.  The Festival Days feature tours of elaborate private gardens  (one with over 150,000 daffodils) and city meadows (Ballard Park quarry meadow has more than 19,000)!  A variety of events take place.  There are musical performances, bike rides, dog parades, window decorating contests and other unique ways to celebrate the happy occasion of  almost half a million bright yellow flowers adding their brilliance to the city.

Ivy lodge , in the heart of the mansion district is the perfect place to stay.  We are located only blocks from Cliff Walk and Bellevue Avenue, areas full of daffodils on display.  Parking is always available,  children are always welcome and our gourmet breakfasts are the best!  This Spring come and celebrate Newport’s Daffodillion Days.

The Newport Winter Festival 2016

Posted by Lisa Conners

This year’s dates for the Newport Winter Festival are February  12, Friday through February  21, Sunday. At the coldest time of the year this is a really cool event!  The festival is “ 10 days of non-stop music, food and fun” (www.newport winterfestival.com) .  The festival often coincides with winter school vacation so there is an abundance of fun entertainment for kids:  Children’s Fair, Princess Party, Easton’s Beach Day, Teddy Bear Musical Celebration, Live Jazz for Kids, Magic Show, Bubblemania  and more.  Of course the centerpiece of the Festival for children and adults is the Newport Skating Center.princessparty3_newportA.jpg

There is music of all types including Beatlemania and the Jimmy Buffet tribute show, Changes in Latitudes.  Adult fun includes several varieties of cocktail competitions.  The local vineyards and brewery have special tastings with samplings and live music.  The comedy shows are excellent.

A food favorite of all is the 20th Annual Samuel Adams Chili Cook Off. Even the fire department participates!   Another very popular event is the exciting, action packed Beach Polo on Easton’s Beach.  It is a festival tradition unlike any other!  There are over 150 events scheduled from ice sculpting to an Illuminated Tour of Ballard Park.

Newport is ideal for walking

Posted by Lisa Conners

Newport is ideal for walking.  The history of American architecture is on display everywhere.  Walk the city streets, Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive, Fort Adams and of course the Harbor and the beaches.  Our scenery does not dim with the season, rather it provides a new perspective on ocean, land and light.   No crowds on the sidewalks make it easier to stop and really see places and details you may have missed in another visit.  Self- guided tours can be just as satisfying as any of the many guided historical tours that are available.  The tours offered by the Newport Historical Society are always outstanding.pelham.png

Avoiding the cold is easy.  Guide -led and self -guided tours are available daily at The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House.  Rosecliff features a special exhibit.  Head inside to The Museum of Newport History at the Brick Market.  The timeline of Newport history is vividly presented in this fascinating museum in the historic Brick Market building.  The exhibits illustrate important events and people of all periods of our history.  It is a great information center and is the departure point for their daily guided tours.

The Newport Skating Center was sorely missed last winter.  It is open and operating all ready for you to enjoy.  Go take a spin on your new Christmas skates!

On January 7, 2016 the Newport Historical Society held  a Living History program at The Colony House, Washington Square. The program “Dressing for a Ball” featured  18th century women’s clothing. These programs are always entertaining.  You might also try a Winter Birding Cruise sponsored by Save the Bay on January 17, a Flamenco concert at the Redwood Library on January 24, or attend the Wasted Talent Show of Stand Up Comedy on January 29 at Hope Underground on Broadway.

Come explore the City by the Sea in a different season.  Then return to Ivy Lodge to warm up by fire.  All of our rooms have fireplaces and offer the perfect place to relax after a long day of discovery.
