UnDecked Halls at Rough Point

Posted by Lisa Conners

describe the imageRough Point is a magnificent oceanfront estate. It was the Newport home of Doris Duke- heiress, philanthropist, art collector. It was bequeathed to the Newport Restoration Foundation, complete with all of its contents in1993. In 1968 Miss Duke founded the Newport Restoration Foundation for the express purpose of preserving, interpreting and maintaining landscape and objects reflecting Aquidneck Island's eighteenth and nineteenth century architectural culture.

During this season Rough Point becomes An Authentic Newport Mansion in Winter, UnDecked Halls at Rough Point. The owners of the massive, multiple summer cottages came to Newport primarily during the warmer months of the year, not for the winter holiday season . They celebrated elsewhere and as a result Bellevue Avenue would be rather dark and quiet. The UnDecked tour will take you through the first floor of the grand house. It focuses on the winter holidays and caretaking traditions that took place at Rough Point even as Miss Duke was celebrating at her Honolulu estate.

The house was kept running and at the ready all year which required significant work. In the tour you will hear about the lives and chores of the servants responsible for all of that upkeep. After viewing formal parts of the house, guests will be invited into the staff dinning room (not normally open to the public). The room will be festively decorated for the season (circa 1970s) as it was when the winter caretakers were in residence. Refreshments and recipes will be available

UnDecked Halls tours will be held Saturdays, December 6, 13 20 and 27 from 10a.m. to 3p.m., offered every half hour.

Christmas in Newport; a Celebration

Posted by Lisa Conners

2014 marks the 44th annual Christmas on Newport festival, a citywide celebration fostering the historic traditions of the holiday season. The program boasts multiple activities for nearly every day of the December calendar with Monday, December 1 being the official opening date. The ceremony in nutcracker at rosecliffWashington Square features the mayor's proclamation, a tree lighting and the Newport Artillery cannon salute. The Newport Historical Society's Open House is held at the top of Washington Square. As part of the official opening ceremony you can tour the historic structure that is the Colony House and listen to festive music and other live entertainment.

The festival seeks to emphasize the non-commercial traditions of the holiday season. With community collaboration among residents, businesses and the city, only clear bulbs illuminate the scenic harbor and wharves, the restored colonials of the Point and Historic Hill sections, and the Victorian splendor of Bellevue avenue. The lights are meant to simulate the candlelight of holidays of bygone days. Christmas in Newport raises thousands of dollars for charity each year. In keeping with the true spirit of the season, any event listed in the annual program must be free of charge or must benefit a non-profit institution or charity.

The Island Moving Company presents a memorable rendition of the beloved ballet classic in the setting of Newport's most romantic mansions, Rosecliff.   Set within the mansion's salons, ballrooms and on the iconic staircase, this unique production has received considerable critical praise. As you follow the scenes from room to room you are so close to the performers you feel yourself to be truly involved in the story. Biking in Newport- the electric bike way with Pedego

Posted by Elyse Foster

describe the image Since Newport is all about fun and having a wonderful memorable time, we at the Ivy Lodge Bed and Breakfast  would like to introduce you the newest thing in biking; Pedego electric bikes.   Pedego electric bikes combine style and function to open up cycling to anyone who might otherwise not be getting the benefits from bike riding. Many people would like to ride a bike in Newport, but find it impractical or impossible because of hills, distance, health reasons, and knee problems.

Our  PEDEGO™ electric bikes make biking Newport  much more accessible, and in a word... FUN.

(Call us at: 401-849-6865 about our Pedego electric bike fall package)

 youngcouple pedego bike

Newport is such a beautiful place to stay and visit.  Arguably the best way to enjoy Newport is by bicycle.  On a bike, you can still appreciate the outdoors -- like walking, but you can also get to places in a quicker fashion than if you were on foot. See the mansions, cruise the 10 mile ocean drive, visit Fort Adams, stop by Castle Hill Lighthouse or just feel the wind in your face.

Newport is a very bike-friendly place.  In 2014 the League of American Bicyclists announced the latest round of Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) awards and Newport has been named a Bronze BFC – the first BFC in the state of Rhode Island!

“Newport is playing a critical role in creating a truly Bicycle Friendly America,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “We know Newport’s investment in bicycling will be returned many times over in the health, environmental, and quality of life benefits of a thriving community.”

The BFC program is transforming the way communities evaluate their quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while benchmarking their progress toward improved bicycle-friendliness. The Bronze BFC award recognizes Newport’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in promotion, education, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies. describe the image

Newport is also the historic home of the bicycling movement. If you take a stroll through Touro Park off Bellevue Avenue, you’ll see this monument (pictured below), carved with the League’s winged wheel logo. Erected in 1980, it commemorates the founders of the League of American Wheelmen (now Bicyclists), who began their commitment to better and safer cycling in our own “City by the Sea.”

 Turo bike monument

The best way to bike in Newport is to stay at the Ivy Lodge and bike the  electric way; with Pedego electric bikes. With their bright colors and a retro look, Pedego Electric Bikes look like the cruiser bikes that dominated the U.S. market in the 1950s before giving way to lightweight Euro racers.

The bikes have wide handlebars, upright seating posture and fat tires just like the old beach bikes. But they have been updated in numerous ways, including aluminum frames, front and rear disc brakes and Shimano gears.

However, the biggest change is the electric motor mounted in the rear wheel with its book-shaped battery discreetly set on the luggage platform above.

Pedego bike

Let us show you why Pedego Electric Bikes, with their classic California styling, are the most enjoyable way to experience Newport. Pedego can give you the freedom and fun of being a kid again!
