Have you ever driven past the pristine granite sculptures on Ocean Drive, wondering what they were? These unique figures are part of the Portuguese Discovery Monument, arranged to depict the compass rose. The monument that we cherish today is actually a remodel of the original sandstone which was donated by Portugal in the 1980’s but could not withstand the elements!
The monument honors the memory of the Portuguese maritime navigators who famously charted unknown oceans and are credited with the discovery of the majority of the world’s nautical routes. It also celebrates Rhode Island’s Portuguese American population and commemorates the enormous hard work and resilience of the Portuguese immigrants who settled here.
Located at Brenton Point State Park, the monument is visited by an abundance of walkers, kite flyers, and beach bums alike. The simplicity of the geometric sculptural shapes are complemented by the sublime colors and cast shadows of Newport’s breathtaking sunsets. Nestled along the stunning Ocean Drive, be sure to pay a visit to this wonderful gem during your next stay with us at The Ivy Lodge Inn!
