Our Proud Ocean Drive Monument

Have you ever driven past the pristine granite sculptures on Ocean Drive, wondering what they were? These unique figures are part of the Portuguese Discovery Monument, arranged to depict the compass rose. The monument that we cherish today is actually a remodel of the original sandstone which was donated by Portugal in the 1980’s but could not withstand the elements!

The monument honors the memory of the Portuguese maritime navigators who famously charted unknown oceans and are credited with the discovery of the majority of the world’s nautical routes. It also celebrates Rhode Island’s Portuguese American population and commemorates the enormous hard work and resilience of the Portuguese immigrants who settled here.

Located at Brenton Point State Park, the monument is visited by an abundance of walkers, kite flyers, and beach bums alike. The simplicity of the geometric sculptural shapes are complemented by the sublime colors and cast shadows of Newport’s breathtaking sunsets. Nestled along the stunning Ocean Drive, be sure to pay a visit to this wonderful gem during your next stay with us at The Ivy Lodge Inn!

Looking for a unique and entertaining activity during your next visit to Newport? Come cheer on the Westchester Polo Club team as they take on Jamaica, England, Mexico, and other polo teams from around the world and major US cities.

Each match makes for a thrilling and eye-catching experience like no other. Very few can match the elegance and finesse of these incredible sportsmen on horseback. Even the highly trained “polo ponies” (which are actually full-sized horses) are exceptional athletes, able to follow immediate commands and capable of quick bursts of speed in an instant!

Hosted by Newport Polo, The Newport International Polo Series taking place at Glen Farm in Portsmouth, runs on Saturdays from August 22nd through September 26th.  A fusion of terrific action and sophisticated style, attending crowds vary as widely as their fashion choices. Some regard Newport as the cradle of elegant sports in America and dress accordingly.  Others are tailgating families and friends enjoying an outdoor afternoon spectacle.

There is a range of admissions for these public exhibition matches. From Lawn and Bleacher seating (first come basis) and Tailgate parking areas (reserved) to the Pavillion Box Seats for prime viewing of the action and the VIP Lounge Day Passes that include many premium amenities (online reservations for the last two choices, www.nptpolo.com). Gates open at 1:00pm (12:00 in September). And not a far drive from the Ivy Lodge Inn, let us host your next Newport vacation! http://www.ivylodge.com/

Posted by Bliss Clemmer

Take a piece of Newport home with you during the weekend of August 15th from the Newport Art Museum’s “Wet Paint” Auction. Featuring well-known local talent, all of the work is freshly painted, and you can even watch artists create their paintings live. This event starts off with a preview party at 6:30PM on Saturday, complete with food and a cash bar, followed by a silent auction. Non-members only pay $15 for the first night, and the doors open again on Sunday at 12:00PM with music on the lawn. Join in the fun in promoting the Newport Art Museum! For more details, visit: http://www.newportartmuseum.org/Programs-Events/Wet-Paint

If you happen to be an artist yourself, you can register online or even in person from 8:00AM-3:00PM to denote an original piece. And did we mention that the Ivy Lodge Inn would be a fine choice of inspiration for a timeless Newport subject? ;)

2015 Welcomes the Triennial Celebration of a Coaching Weekend in Newport

Posted by Bliss Clemmer and Lisa Conners

Featuring highly trained, matched teams of horses drawing authentic, nineteenth century coaches through the streets of Newport.

If you are fortunate to be visiting Newport the week of August 20th, you will have the opportunity of a lifetime! Experience more than a dozen teams of horses drawn by their colorful coaches in a glistening tack, through the streets of Newport and the grounds of the spectacular gilded age mansions. They come from all over the country for these demonstrations of a century old tradition which was a regular feature of fashionable New York and Newport life.

These spectacular road coaches, carrying more than ten people including footmen and grooms, are each driven by at least four horses.  Driving the “4 in hand” requires tremendous skill , and the driver, called “the whip” must possess  cool judgement  and knowledge of the horses, watching their teams carefully for a stumble or nervousness while the horses move with amazing precision.

On Saturday, August 22 on the lawns of the Elms, there is also a public performance in which each team must execute a series of complex movements. Every day from August 20-23, there is free public viewing of the historic coaches along their routes throughout the city.

Ivy Lodge is situated right in heart of all of this! Nothing compares to our close proximity to the horses, the people and the action of this singular event. You will be front and center for an unforgettable experience. Visit our website to see current availability. A weekend of coaching happens only once, every three years.  Ivy Lodge is the perfect place for you to have a most unique, memorable visit to the City by the Sea.
